Meet our Members

Vicky Ashberry
Vicky has been appearing on the amateur stage since childhood. She soon realised that she was
not going to be the next Margot Fonteyn so switched to acting. On settling in Lincolnshire she joined Wyberton Theatrical Society in Boston, for whom she played Hermia (‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’),
Betty (‘Vinegar Tom’) and Fliss (‘Bazaar and Rummage’). She then joined Bourne Footlights, where
she played Angela (‘Angel’) was assistant stage manager on a production of ‘Wait Until Dark’.

She is a founder member of Common Ground Theatre Company. Roles to date include Susan (‘Bed
Among the Lentils’), Eva Mason (‘The Accrington Pals’) and Agnes (‘The Ark’). She directed ‘The
Children’s Hour’ in November 2003 and co-directed and appeared in 'Gaslight Extravaganza' in May
2004.

Jez Ashberry
Jez is chairman of Common Ground Theatre Company but had to wait two years before he got a part
in one of its plays. He founded the Comedy Society at Hull University, appearing twice in revue at Spring Street Theatre, home of Hull Truck, and later joined Boston Playgoers and Wyberton Theatrical Society, where roles included Peter Pathelin (‘The Farce of Master Peter Pathelin’), the Constable (‘Accidental
Death of an Anarchist’), Bottom (‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’) and Man (‘Vinegar Tom’). He also
directed ‘The Farce of Master Peter Pathelin’ and wrote and directed two plays, ‘Walk Out To Winter’
and ‘The Secretary’.

For Bourne Footlights he played Ian in ‘A Chorus of Disapproval’ and Dennis in ‘One for the Road’ and directed ‘Abigail’s Party’. He directed Common Ground’s first production, ‘Spring and Port Wine’,
played Fritz’ in ‘A Dog’s Life’ and co-directed and appeared in 'Gaslight Extravaganza' in May 2004.

Su Toogood
Su has bags of previous experience from running her own religious drama company for five years, and
since moving to Lincoln she has played a variety of roles with the Lancastria Theatre Company, the Community Play Association and RAFTA. Common Ground has given her the chance to play the
contrasting roles of motherly Daisy in ‘Spring and Port Wine’ and saucy Sarah in ‘The Accrington
Pals’.

She directed her first plays for Common Ground – ‘Shoppers’ and ‘A Dog’s Life’ – in March and
April 2003 and appeared in 'Gaslight Extravaganza' in May 2004.

Sheryl Tribe

Sheryl has appeared on TV as a supporting artist in numerous dramas, including ‘Micawber’, ‘The
Forsythe Saga’, and in the soaps ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Hollyoaks’. She also has done a couple of community theatre plays. She made her bow for Common Ground playing mill girl Berth Treecott in
‘The Accrington Pals’ and played Martha in 'The Children's Hour' (November 2004). She appeared in
'Gaslight Extravaganza' in May 2004.

Richard Wood

Richard graduated in 1987 and has since worked with various theatre companies and appeared in no
fewer than 14 Shakespeare productions. Roles have included Banquo in ‘Macbeth’ (1987), Albany in
‘King Lear’ (1991), Shylock in ‘Merchant of Venice’ (1992), Rosencrantz in ‘Hamlet’ (1993), Don Pedro
in ‘Much Ado’ (1998) and Richmond in ‘Richard III’ (1999).

Favourite roles include Jimmy Porter in ‘Look Back in Anger’ (1988), McCann in ‘The Birthday Party’
(1994), First Voice in ‘Under Milk Wood ‘ (1998), Lucifer in ‘Dr Faustus’ (2001) and Jack Favell in
‘Rebecca’ at Sleaford Playhouse.

Patrick Cant

Patrick lives in Lincoln and works in Lincolnshire as a lighting engineer. He made his stage debut
playing phlegmatic Arthur in CGTC’s ‘Spring and Port Wine’ and cemented his reputation as a
no-nonsense northerner by apearing as Tom Hackford in ‘The Accrington Pals’.

Christine Bellamy

A lecturer in Media Production at the University of Lincoln, Christine has appeared in two of our
productions, playing Irene in 'Talking Heads' and the visitor in 'A Dog's Life'.

She played the role of Agatha in 'The Children's Hour' in November 2003.

Charles Newby
Charles is a prominent Lincolnshire librarian and a founder member of Common Ground Theatre
Company. His chief role is as the society's treasurer, and as regular front of house manager he is
also the 'acceptable face' of the society during production week.

He auditioned for and was cast in the ill-fated spring 2002 production of Willy Russell's 'Breezeblock
Park' but as that show never reached the stage we will never know if he can act or not.

Ian Smith
Ian is one of the original members of the Common Ground and has been involved in every production
so far as set designer, set builder, stage manager, ASM, sound technician, chef, tea boy or shoulder
to cry on. His first acting role for the group was as the Warden in 'A Dog's Life'. He will forever be remembered for his performances as The Strongman of the Bosphorus Baths and Squire William in
'Gaslight Extravaganza' in May 2004.

Elsewhere he has played the Peanut Seller ('Little Women'), John Rowe ('Murder on Drinsey Nook'),
Silas Tuxford, Turn-key ('The Alternate Castle Tour'), Aslan ('The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe')
Harry Hargreaves ('In the Shadow of Pendle Hill'), Sergeant Connolly ('It Runs in the Family'), King
Fruma and the Headmaster in 'An Alien Stole my Skateboard', the Waiter in 'Confusions' and Baron
Hardup, Friar Tuck and Terminator 2 in local pantos.

Gaynor Little
Acting is in Gaynor's blood - she can't stop it even though she gets terrified just before she goes on
stage and constantly threatens to quit because of the stress.

A shocking line-learner but a terrific actress, she first teamed up with Jez and Vicky Ashberry as a
member of Wyberton Theatrical Society in Boston. She is a founder member of Common Ground and appeared in our first production, 'Spring and Port Wine', as the Cromptons' flighty neighbour Betsy
Jane.

She starred in the Lincoln Community Play in 2001, is a member of Metheringham Players and has
an acting CV as long as your arm - it certainly won't fit into this tiny space.
