Scene 1 - the Lee family moves into the cottage with all their meagre possessions

The Lee brothers pay a visit to old Granny Trill and hear what the almanack has in store Granny Wallon takes exception to the dates on her rival Granny Trill's headstone Vincent returns to his local and his eager boasting soon leads to his downfall "Put her in top Uncle Sid!" It looks a bit black over Stroud but the bus trip is on its way

Mrs Pimbury sings a song about a mushroom at the annual parochial church tea

Rosie offers Loll a drink of cider as the youths begin to discover the opposite sex "My mother would grow roses with each hand, drawing them forth from country frothing air" Miss Wardley takes control of the schoolroom - much to young Loll's displeasure The play ends with the funeral of Loll's mother, poignantly remembered by narrator Laurie Lee

Jack and Loll argue about who is the more intelligent while Tony plays pirates

It's winter time and the Lee family are getting the children ready for bed A scene of domestic contentment - Mother shows Jack her latest antique purchase "My old father years ago had a maid who loved him so, but their story went awry..."
"They found Uncle Sid asleep at the wheel. He were drunk!" All alone on the telephone: Marjory entertains the audience "Grow them, shape them, cut them from the thorn..." The Lee house was unfortunately prone to frequent flooding
